Webinar: Indigenous Solutions to Territorial Threats

Join us as we talk about new findings from Vanishing Footprints:The Race to Protect Isolated Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon, a spatial analysis co-created with ORPIO, AIDESEP, and COIAB. The report documents existential threats facing the proposed 16-million-hectare corridor along the Brazil–Peru border, home to the world's highest concentration of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI). We will also examine global patterns documented in Indigenous Peoples' Territories and Local Communities on the Frontlines, released by the Global Alliance of Territorial Communities (GATC) and Earth Insight. That report's findings are stark: in the Amazon alone, 31 million hectares of Indigenous territories overlap with oil and gas blocks. Despite representing just 5% of the global population, Indigenous Peoples and local communities safeguard 54% of the world's remaining intact forests.

Together, these two reports make the case that Indigenous territorial rights are inseparable from global climate and biodiversity goals and that direct funding to communities is among the most cost-effective strategies available.
